Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14. Saint Valentine’s Day is not a public holiday in any country.
The fact that no one calls it “St. Valentine’s Day” anymore is a testament to how commercialized it’s become. Every single day of the year is some Catholic saint’s day. St. Valentine was no different than the hundreds of other saints, except companies realized they could make a lot of money by playing up the romantic aspect of this saint’s martyrdom, so they did. They dropped the “saint” part, and now “valentine” is not a name, but a thing you buy for someone you like.
Just ask yourself this: Will you be going to Mass to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day this year, or are you going to celebrate it some other way? Did you even consider going to Mass to celebrate it? Probably not, because it’s been completely co-opted by over-commercialization.
However, friends of mine knows that I’m thoughtful. I always send something nice to my friends, well just a little something, a cute note or even a small cute things or chocolate, lately just giving it to friends that’s here.
